A quiet
way of looking.

I'm Amna, a photographer in Berkeley. I make pictures that feel like the day, only a little more golden. Slow, editorial, patient with children, gentle with parents, unafraid of long pauses.

I. The practice

Eight years
of looking.

My work began in 2017, in a small apartment kitchen with a borrowed lens. The light through the window was the first lesson. Eight years on, the light is still the best thing in any room.

I photograph editorially, which is a long word for: I work like a journalist of small moments. The slow unspooling of a wedding morning. The first quiet hour after a baby comes home. A father lifting his daughter to look at something neither of them will remember by Friday.

Most of my sessions are unposed. I will ask very little of you. I do, however, ask for time. The best frames almost always arrive late, after everyone has forgotten they're being photographed.

II. Approach

A short
manifesto.

Five small commitments to the people I photograph.

Tangible memory

"
We almost didn't book a newborn session because we were exhausted. We are so glad we did. Amna arrived like a friend who happened to bring a camera, and the photographs are the most honest thing we own.
